Taman Ayun Mengwi Temple is a relic of the Mengwi Kingdom. The construction of this temple began in 1632 AD or 1554 Saka and took about 2 years to complete.
This temple was completed on Tuesday Kliwon Medangsia in the fourth month of 1556 Saka or 1634 AD. The purpose of King I Gusti Agung Putu in building this temple was to worship the ancestors of the previous kings.
At first the name of this temple was Genter Temple, but after the kingdom developed, Genter Temple was expanded again. and the addition of a temple building so that the name of the temple was changed to Taman Ayun Mengwi Temple.
The construction of this temple was assisted by a Chinese architect who was given the nickname I Kongco by the Mengwi kingdom. The temple has undergone several renovations and repairs, the first of which was in 1750.
Major renovations took place in 1932 a few years after an earthquake destroyed most of the temple. Then several temple areas were renovated again in 1949. The philosophy of the building in the third courtyard depicts Mount Meru in the middle of a sea of milk.
